    Performance -SmartExtraction is setting new standards
    More than 35 years after describing the first silica-based DNA and RNA isolation1 technique, Analytik Jena is now launching another global first in the field of nucleic acid extraction. SmartExtraction not only makes the entire workflow considerably faster and much easier – it is also in keeping with the trend toward automating processes to the fullest possible extent.

    In order to maximize the freedom that users have in selecting the best tool for their needs, the SmartExtraction concept is not linked to any single platform: the technology can be used on all Analytik Jena pipetting systems2 (InnuPure® C16 & C96, CyBio® SELMA, GeneTheatre, CyBio® FeliX, etc.) and can be adapted to any liquid-handling system. Besides being easy to process, SmartExtraction is superior to other technologies in terms of yield, DNA quality, and efficiency criteria as well: given appropriate starting materials, its tremendous binding capacity makes the technology suitable for extracting large amounts of high-molecularweight DNA.

    In many applications, the technology yields much greater quantities of extracted nucleic acids than can be achieved with magnetic-particle technology combined with automated pipetting and extraction systems – all while greatly reducing the amount of prep time needed.
    This moves beyond optimization and into the realm of a quantum leap.

    Principle - DC-Technology® meets Smart Surfaces

    • No phenol/chloroform

    • No silica material and/or spin-filter columns
    • No silica or magnetic particle suspensions

    At the heart of DC-Technology® is a combination of chaotropic and non-chaotropic salts with low ionic strengths that enable the development of unique lysis and binding buffers. Inside the 1 mL filter tip is a Smart Modified Surface for selectively binding the desired nucleic acids, followed by a highly efficient elution process. The system eliminates the need for other solid phases, such as filter materials, magnetic particles and silica – along with all of their disadvantages.

    Method -  Focusing on what’s important
    One of the ways that SmartExtraction fundamentally alters the process of isolating and purifying nucleic acids is by eliminating the need for a number of work sequences, extra materials and specialized equipment. Developed by the experts at Analytik Jena, the Smart Modified Surface ensures that the entire extraction process takes place right inside the pipette tip. For existing workflows, this means that special tools, such as magnets, vacuum station or centrifuges, are not needed for any of steps involved. From lysis to DNA desorption, the entire process consists of nothing more than pipetting up and down. Because the DNA no longer needs to be bound to magnetic particles or silica, the process also eliminates such time-consuming steps as resuspension and separation/ centrifugation.
